Unforgettable stay at Castello di Colognole

Submitted: 29-Mar-2014  Date of Stay: Mar 2014

Our trip to Greve and stay at Castello di Colognole was a trip of a lifetime. From the moment we arrived at the castle and were greeted by our most kind & gracious host, Rosita, we knew that we were someplace special. The descriptions and photos posted here are accurate but cannot possibly capture the breathtaking beauty (in its entirety) surrounding us.
The castle itself is incredible; well taken care of, clean, maintaining much of its 12th century charm. My family & I--five of us--stayed in the Quartesi, a comfortable and spacious apartment.
Since this was a trip with extended family, we used all three apartments and deemed them all quite wonderful. It was so nice, after a long day traveling, to come back to our respective apartments, have time with our own familes, then meet up later for apertivi and dinner. A favorite spot to do this was in the garden with breathtaking views of the rolling green vineyards & olive groves of Chianti.
The town of Greve is lovely. Complete with a beautiful piazza 5 minutes from the castle, grocery stores, cafes, restaurants, and so much more--everything you could possibly need.
Centrally located, we made trips from Greve to the beautiful medieval towns of Montefioralle, Voltera, San Gimignano, and beautiful Siena. It was easy to catch a bus to Florence right in town for the day.

I would recommend this property without a moment's hesitation. I would also recommend having a delicious & authentic dinner prepared by Rosita's sister, Rita, who uses fresh ingredients from her garden and creates some of the most delicious dishes I have ever eaten. I only hope that we will one day be able to go back to this wonderful place!

Enchanting Castle

We could not have hoped for more hospitable and charming hosts. Rosita was incredibly accommodating and even appeared to buy a new iron for us when we asked if an iron would be available. Rosita's sister, Rita, was also very warm and welcoming, not to mention a fabulous cook. We would highly recommend having the home-cooked Tuscan meal, which was not only delicious but a great value. Rita, who could often be found tending to her garden, featured many of the fruits and vegetables from that garden in the meal that she cooked for us. The pictures of the apartment were very accurate and the apartment was clean and well-maintained. No pictures, however, could do justice to the stunning views from the garden. There are also nice paths in the woods nearby that are ideal for a walk or run. We highly recommend dinner at La Castellana in nearby Montefioralle as well as Il Malborghetto in Lecchi. The castle is in a great location that is well-suited for exploring the region and taking day trips to Florence and Siena. We even managed to do a day trip to Rome by taking the high speed train in Florence. The apartment is in on 3 levels but we did not find the stairs to be a problem. We enjoyed our stay very much. You will not be disappointed.

From the very first email, I felt warmly welcomed to Castello Di Colognole and knew it was the place we wanted to stay. I wasn't disappointed. Rosita and Rita are perfect hosts and made us feel completely at home from the very beginning. We are a family of 2 adults and 3 teenagers and stayed in the Quaratesi apartment, which was perfect for us. It had plenty of space in the upstairs living room for us all to hang out and enjoy each other's company, or simply do our own thing.

The castle was beautiful, with original features and breathtaking views across the valley. The peaceful garden was a pleasure to sit in, read, drink the local chianti and to simply daydream. We ate a couple of delicious meals in the garden, cooked for us by Rita who uses ingredients from her own vegetable garden, and accompanied by the Castello Di Colognole's own Chianti Classico! Rita is an excellent cook!

The castle is situated perfectly, not only for the view, but also for easy day trips to Siena, Florence and many more beautiful places. Greve, itself, is only 5 mins away and offers shops and restaurants, a fabulous Saturday market, bakery, coffee shop etc.

I can't thank Rosita and Rita enough for making us feel so at home. We absolutely loved our stay here and highly recommend it. It was very difficult having to leave and we will certainly be back again!
Owner's Response: Dear guests,

we always do our best to satisfy your stay at our property and we are happy when you let us know we succeeded. Thank you your nice review.

We were welcomed by Rosita and Rita to the beautiful castle on top of the hill outside of Greve. We stayed for 5 nights in the Quaratesi apartment with our 2 teenage sons, age 18 and 16. The gardens and views are beautiful. Rita fixed us dinner on Sunday night-and breakfast Monday morning. Wonderful, delicious, and we ate on the large outdoor patio. The apartment was very spacious on 3 floors-sort of large for us 4, but we were very comfortable. We explored all the nearby hill towns and Florence during the day and came home in the evening after having dinner in one of the nearby hill towns (30-40 minute drives away). We arrived during one of the hottest weeks of the summer in Italy. Because the castle is on top of the hill, and made of stone, keeping the windows/shutters closed during the day, keeps it cool. At night the breeze comes up, you open the windows, and let the cool breezes in. Fans are also provided. Wonderful location for families, the dogs are very friendly, and do not beg, they just want you to play ball, or scratch their ears! We highly recommend this property-it is really wonderful! Thank you Rosita and Rita for being wonderful hostesses!
Owner's Response: Dear Janine,

Thank you very much for your nice review so filled of positive details. It has been a great pleasure for me and for my sister to meeting you and your wonderful family. We really look forward to meeting you again. Rosita and Rita

Fantastic apartment, characterful, amazing views

5 out of 5  Review Submitted: 17-Aug-2013  Date of Stay: Jul 2013
Castle Colognole is an amazing place to stay, we stayed in the Bacco apartment which is huge and full of character with its enormous fireplace. It's really quirky and a real castle, apparently the tower was started in 980 (hope I remembered that correctly Rosita!) It gives you that feeling that you are staying somewhere special and has all mod cons, free wi fi (important with teens!), air con in the bedroom and a fantastically equipped kitchen. The gardens are beautiful and it has a lovely outlook on to rolling hills covered with olive trees and vines, we loved just sitting and enjoying the views.

Rita and Rosita were so friendly and welcoming, they make you feel like you are staying with friends and the dogs are super friendly too. We had a family cooking lesson with Rita and learned some new dishes and made fresh pasta, the vegetables were from Rita's garden and she made sure that my younger daughter who is vegetarian was also catered for. The Chianti made at the castle is very good and available to buy. We ate very well that night!

Florence is an easy drive away, very busy in August! Castellina is a nice town about 20 km away and the town of Greve has a nice square and restaurants.

I certainly recommend Castle Colognole, we were only there 3 nights and I wish that I had booked longer there now. It was easily the nicest place we stayed at during our fortnight in Tuscany.

We arrived at Castello di Colognole late in the afternoon and were warmly greeted by Rosita and Rita and their beautiful dogs. A fire blazed in the huge fireplace in our apartment and we felt at home at once. We had booked a cooking lesson with Rita for that night and the food was delicious. Rita cooked again for us a few days later, and once again the food, cooked with fresh ingredients and vegetables from the garden, was wonderful. The Castello is breathtaking - the building is magnificent and the grounds and views are stunning. The website photos don't do it justice at all. Our apartment was HUGE. It had all the mod cons - central heating, a large, well equipped farmstyle kitchen and two modern bathrooms, however the character of the building had been retained and the comfortable furnishings complemented the building style. Although there was a big lounge and dining room, we ate and sat at night in the sitting room with its enormous fireplace. Carlo ensured that we always had plenty of wood. The Castello is a short drive to Greve which is a charming town with a beautiful Piazza and lovely shops, cafes and a restaurant. Sienna, San Gimignano, and Florence were within easy driving distance, however on our 2nd trip to Florence we took the bus which was much easier than driving into the city. We even managed a day trip to Pisa. Closer to home there is the opportunity to do wine tastings or explore small local villages. Rosita and Rita made us feel like family. They were friendly and helpful and delightful. We would have absolutely no hesitation in booking a holiday at the Castello again and would confidently recommend it to friends and family.Recommended for:  Age 55+, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway

Tuscan countryside at its panoramic best

Review Submitted: June 20, 2010 Date of Stay: June 2010

We spent a delightful week at the Bacco apartment in June, 2010. We gave up easy day trips to the Tuscan hill towns to spent time in the lovely flower garden, eating meals, sipping wine, and enjoying the castle's panoramic views of vineyards, olive groves and Chianti hills. Rita taught a cooking class for us with fresh food from her garden which we replicated in our well-equipped, modern kitchen. Original architectural features of a 12th century castle fascinated us. The bedrooms were very comfortable and quiet, and beds have beautiful, crisp linens. Rita arranges the flowers from her garden to fill the apartment. Rosita, Rita's sister, uses impeccable English to answer all questions. We have decided to return in the fall to see the grape harvest, as both wine and olive oil are produced on the estate, and to visit again these friendly and accommodating sisters.Recommended for:  Age 55+, Adventure Seekers, Girls Getaway, Tourists without a Car, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway

An Experience To Remember

First-Time Italian Travelers Mons, Belgium

Review Submitted: May 14, 2010 Date of Stay: April 2010

My family of eight arrived at the castle after a long week and a half of traveling across Italy. We were ready to rest, and we came to the perfect place! The castle is secluded and quiet. Lilac and lavendar were blooming everywhere, and the weather in the middle of April was sunny but cool. We were greeted by Rosita and Rita, whose hospitality and kindness toward not only my husband and me, but our six children, was unparalleled. The apartment they fixed for us was quaint yet modern and incredibly spacious - the beds were made lovingly and the meal that was prepared for us that evening was deliciously seasoned with fresh garden herbs. The wine here is exquisite. A trip to the castle alone is a vacation. We walked the grounds for hours and there are several extensive hiking paths just up the road. We felt at home and can't wait to return. Florence was an easy 45 minute drive, and from the parking location Rosita recommended, we easily walked to the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and the Galleria. The castle is also a little over an hour from Assissi and Ravenna, Sienna and many other wonderful smaller Italian cities every tourist should see. We highly recommend this vacation site!Recommended for:  Age 55+, Pet-friendly, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children, Romantic GetawayOwner's Response: Dear Tevia and Edward, thank you very much for the nice review about your staying at the Colognole Castle. Beautiful & Relaxing Stay

Review Submitted: November 16, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009

My husband and I visited this property the last week of July 2009 and stayed for one week. Where do I begin...The apartment was perfect! It contained everything that you would ever need for your stay including laundry facilities and a dishwasher. We shopped in the local market and prepared most of our meals. We typically ate out once per day depending on where our travels took us. This property is located in perfect proximity for day trips to Pisa, Florence and Siena (which we did). We did a day trip every other day and just hung back at the little villages nearby on the off days. Rita offers cooking classes at an extremely inexpensive price and we used the vegetables and herbs fresh from her garden. And let me assure you...the meal was delicious. The view from the back garden is magnificent. We ate overlooking the rolling hillside of vineyards and olive groves. The village is a 2 minute drive and could be walked (it’s just a bit hilly). Nice village with an internet cafe/coffee shop if you didn’t bring your computer. Rosita, Rita and Faustus not only welcomed us into their home, but also into their hearts. We flew into Rome on a Sunday morning where we picked up our rental car and drove straight to the castle for our first week (of a 2 week trip). Of course, nothing is open on Sundays so Rita prepared a wonderful dinner for us and we enjoyed it in the back garden with a bottle of wine from Faustus' vineyard. We also chose the option for breakfast the next morning as we had yet to get groceries. When we left, we went to Venice for 3 nights where we rented an apartment that seemed so cold to us after having stayed at Castello di Colognole. If they had not had our apartment already rented for the next week. I would have much rather stayed there longer. They have two dogs who are very playful and well behaved. As we lost our puppy early July, we felt so blessed to be around Bacco and Jemma. There is no air conditioning, however, there are fans and we did not have any trouble sleeping. They do have misquittos but so do we here in Canada. Rosita speaks english with minimal difficulty. Rita is learning and we really didn't have any trouble communicating. If you are looking to enrich your life by experiencing the authenic life in Tuscany, this place is a must! It was truly like a second honeymoon for us! We will definitely return...but next time, for a longer period of time. Charming historical residence

Really charming historical residence, with magical atemporal atmosphere, calm and elegance; large spaces tastefully decorated, with old furniture and a lot of other artistic old objects; wonderful garden with magnificent views on Chianti's hills, equipped with all you would need to fully experience what "dolce far niente" really means. Last but not least, the wonderful family of owners - exquisite intellectuals, devoted to the preservation of historical family heritage and cultural traditions - is consistently contributing to make your stay in Castello di Colognole a real pleasure and an unforgettable holiday. I definitely would like to go there again!Recommended for:  Age 55+, Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway
